Research Team
Sungwoo Lim:
Sungwoo is a Research Associate and Project co-ordinator in the Construction Management Research Group, joining Loughborough University in 2008. His current research focuses mainly on design application and optimisation of printing path for Concrete Printing. Prior to the current project, Sungwoo was an architectural designer, worked at University of Strathclyde and Brunel University, and was involved in six research projects including his PhD research. He has multi-disciplinary research experiences and interests, e.g. Sketch recognition, Shape Grammar, Additive Manufacturing (AM), Computer-aided Architectural Design (CAAD), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), and Design Management (DM).
Salim Barbhuiya:
Salim Barbhuiya joined Loughborough University in November 2011. He completed his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology Silchar, India, Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and obtained his PhD in Structural Materials from Queen’s University Belfast. From January 2010 to October 2011, he worked as a Research Associate in the School of Engineering at the University of the West of Scotland in an EU project involving 8 partners from both the industry and the academia. Prior to that (from October 2008 to January 2010) he was employed as a Research Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast. His research interests include: application of nanotechnology in construction materials, use of supplementary cementitious materials in concrete and durability monitoring of concrete structures.
John Webster:
John Webster is a mechanical engineer and has worked at a number of academic institutions including Nottingham, De Montfort and Loughborough University. Prior to academia, John was a tool maker and over the last 20 year he has developed particular expertise in the development additive manufacturing machines and processes. He brings his mechanical engineering, process, Computer based design and numerical machine control skills to the Freeform project to design and build the Concrete Printing machine and associated processes.
Former Researchers
Thanh Le:
Thanh Le is a material post-doctoral researcher working in the project “Freeform Construction: Mega-scale Rapid Manufacturing for Construction”. After completing his BEng in Civil Engineering and MSc in Construction Materials at National University of Civil Engineering of Vietnam, he carried out a 4 year study on Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) in the University of Liverpool to gain a PhD degree in Concrete Technology in 2008. His research interests are primarily in the area of construction materials, especially in high performance fibre reinforced concretes.
Tong Yang:
Tong Yang joined Loughborough University in Dec2008 as a Research Associateto work in developing an innovative coupling system of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and human thermo-physiological models to predict human-environment interactions in buildings. In her MSc and PhD research studies at the University of Nottingham, she carried out extensive CFD modelling and full-scale experimental work to investigate natural ventilation in buildings. Tong is a committee member of the CIBSE Natural Ventilation Group and a member of CIBSE Intelligent Buildings Group and she engages in effective communication between academics and design professionals. Tong brings her wide range of modelling skills and structural engineering experience to implement rapid manufacturing (RM) technique into system functional integration from building design stages to full-scale construction processes.
